Israelis occupied the eastern part of the city during the war of 1967 and they insist that Jerusalem is the "single and indivisible" capital of Israel.

Mogherini added that "the aspirations of both parties must be fulfilled and a way must be found through negotiations to resolve the status of Jerusalem as the future capital of both states".

In Cairo, the head of Egypt's largest Christian church announced he would not meet US Vice President Mike Pence when he visits Cairo on December 20.

French President Emmanuel Macron told Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday that he needed to make gestures to the Palestinians to enable to break the impasse between the two sides.

The United States has become the first country in the world to recognise Jerusalem as the capital of Israel following Trumps' decision.

Angela Merkel's spokesman said the German Chancellor "doesn't support" the USA decision and believes that "the status of Jerusalem needs to be negotiated" as part of talks on a two-state solution.

There were fresh clashes Saturday as Palestinian protesters in the occupied West Bank hurled stones at Israeli troops who responded with tear gas, rubber bullets and live rounds. Hundreds of Israeli Arabs protested Saturday along a major highway in northern Israel, where dozens of masked rioters hurled stones at buses and police vehicles. About 60 Palestinian youths threw stones at Israeli soldiers across the Gaza-Israel border and the health ministry said at least 10 were wounded by Israeli fire. Police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said the guard sustained a serious wound to his upper body and the attacker was apprehended. It also raised questions about how Israel could so aggressively oppose worldwide boycott campaigns against it while one of its most senior ministers called for one against its own citizens. He suggested Israel freeze construction in the West Bank and East Jerusalem.

President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo has strongly condemned Trump's move, which he described as a violation of United Nations resolutions.

He said: 'Trump seeks to move forwards by saying "there we go, I did it, it's done!".

Erdogan has called for an emergency meeting of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) in Istanbul on Wednesday to discuss the Jerusalem issue.
