American ski racer Lindsey Vonn has said that she'll be representing the U.S. people when she races at the 2018 Winter Olympics in South Korea, not USA president Donald Trump.
In an interview Wednesday with Fox News Channel, Haley was asked if it's an open question about whether the US team will compete at the Olympics in South Korea, given the tensions on the Korean Peninsula.
Both later softened their stance, and Sanders tweeted, "The U.S. looks forward to participating in the Winter Olympics in South Korea".
The USOC responded with a statement Thursday saying plans to compete in the Olympics, which run February 9-25, hadn't changed. "But if she wins, she is not going to the White House". Hwang said that during a phone conversation with South Korean President Moon Jae-in last week, Trump told the South Korean leader that American athletes and senior government officials would be heading to the Games.
Coincidentally, the White House plays no role in that decision, as it is up to the United States Olympic Committee. She later tweeted that the US "looks forward to participating".
"Each host city presents a unique challenge from a security perspective, and that is no different in this regard", spokesman Mark Jones said.
"Right, our athletes are invited to participate under the neutral flag, but nobody can limit fans in using the national flag, and we always can support our team", the designer told TASS.
Haley last Wednesday cited security concerns over increased tensions with North Korea in her comments about sending USA athletes to the winter games.
That same week, USOC CEO Scott Blackmun said, "From our perspective, with the information we now have, it's full-steam ahead". "So we are 100 percent committed to our athletes on that but don't want to get into a discussion around what the legalities might be".
"I recall prior to the 2014 games in Sochi, there was a tremendous amount of apprehension about security issues related to those Games", said Larry Probst, USOC chairman.
