The images offer a different perspective on the scope of the fires, with most capturing massive plumes of smoke.

NASA astronaut Randy Bresnik took photos of the wildfires burning in southern California from the International Space Station. "Unfortunately we can", Bresnik tweeted on Wednesday evening, accompanied by a series of devastating images. They issued red flag warnings for Los Angles and Ventura counties through December 8, noting that isolated wind gusts of 80 miles (130 kilometers) per hour are possible. The active fire is orange and the burned area is brown, showing a huge area of destruction left by the flames.

The southern California wildfires could be seen by the International Space Station crew from their vantage point in low Earth orbit. "May the Santa Ana's die down soon".

Earlier, NASA had posted satellite photos of the fires taken on December 5 by its Terra satellite and the European Space Agency's Sentinel-2. The ESA image shows the burn scar on the fire's second day, a powerful indication of how fast the blaze devastated the Ventura County hills.

More than 4,500 firefighters have been working to stem the fire. Both Bresnik and NASA put out additional updates on Friday afternoon, showcasing a variety of images that would not only demonstrate the scale of the fires, but, as NASA put it, also "help 1st responders plan their course of action".
