UNfriendly: North Korea's Kim Jong-un Shuns UN Visitor

South Korea and the USA, meanwhile, have launched a massive military exercise involving some 12,000 military personnel and approximately 250 aircraft, including bombers and stealth fighters.

While Feltman has met on this visit with North Korean Foreign Minister Ri Yong-ho, the highest ranking United Nations official to visit North Korea appears to have been shunned by the big boss himself.

On Sunday, the North's Committee for the Peaceful Reunification called US President Donald Trump "insane" and warned that the drill would "push the already acute situation on the Korean peninsula to the brink of nuclear war".

"The only question left is when the war will break out", the official stressed.

"These confrontational warmongering remarks can not be interpreted in any other way but as a warning to us to be prepared for a war on the Korean peninsula", the spokesperson is reported as saying.

The B-1B Lancer bomber flew from Guam and joined the massive joint aerial drills over the peninsula on Wednesday, according to South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS). It has been particularly sensitive about B-1B bombers, describing them as "nuclear strategic" although the planes were switched to conventional weaponry in the mid-1990s.

It's not immediately known what the two discussed but Korean Peninsula issues, including the North's nuclear and missile programs, are expected to have been on the agenda.

"The Russian Federation respects North Korea's sovereignty and the right of the North Korean people to sovereign development..."

McMaster's remarks even saw Republican Senator Lindsey Graham say it was necessary to move all the United States military dependents out of the peninsula for fear of war breaking out.

That prompted North Korea's foreign minister, Ri Yong Ho, to warn that the North could shoot down the United States bombers even if they did not enter North Korean airspace.

Six U.N. agencies, with approximately 50 global staff, are represented in the North. China opposes North Korea's nuclear program but sees Pyongyang as a buffer against USA forces stationed in the South.

North Korean soldiers watch a fireworks display put on to celebrate the North's declaration on November 29 it had achieved full nuclear statehood, during a mass rally on Kim Il-Sung Square in Pyongyang on December 1, 2017.
