Giancarlo Stanton Doesn't Approve Trade to Cardinals Despite Agreement With Marlins

  • Cardinals Confirm Giancarlo Stanton will Not Waive No-Trade Clause for St. Louis

In doing so he is refusing to go to either the Giants or Cardinals, the two teams that had worked out parameters of a trade with the Marlins, and on Friday both of those teams reacted to Stanton's power play by essentially saying they were no longer interested. Blame the front office that for some foolish reason gave Stanton a no-trade clause over a 13-year, $325 million deal.

Stanton is owed between $25 million and $32 million each of the next 10 seasons.

The Los Angeles Dodgers have quietly kept their hand in the sweepstakes for Giancarlo Stanton, who is believed to have them as by far his No. 1 choice on his unofficial list of trade preferences.

The Dodgers' best hope may be to see Stanton turn down the Giants and Cardinals, and hope Stanton is willing to wait things out to play for his preferred team - and that wait could take awhile (perhaps even a year or more).

If the Marlins agree to pick up a significant portion of the contract, it seems the Dodgers could agree to take him.

The Yankees do have money to spend this winter, with some $70 million coming off the books in expired contracts, and on Wednesday at the Stadium, Hal Steinbrenner promised he'd do just that. And that puts the Yankees in a unique situation, one that an aggressive general manager like Brian Cashman would have to address with ownership. The Miami Marlins have reportedly agreed to the framework of a deal with both teams, but the National League MVP victor seems to have his eyes on playing elsewhere. A lineup that includes Judge, Stanton and Gary Sanchez would be the most formidable in all of baseball.

Now, it's up to the Yankees to either find a creative route toward landing the Marlins' slugger, or stick to their this-time-we're-serious plans of fiscal restraint, aimed at finally getting below the luxury tax threshold. His 59 home runs were the most in the majors since Barry Bonds hit 73 in 2001.

Meanwhile the Yankees, tempted as they may be, are convinced they'll get there without adding such a weapon.
