Email to Trump offered WikiLeaks documents

  • U.S. President Donald Trump speaks during a rally in Pensacola Florida U.S. on Friday Dec. 8 2017. He pushed back Monday at a weekend report that highlighted his TV viewing habits

CNN reported Friday morning that Donald Trump Jr. received an email on September 4, 2016, that granted special access to WikiLeaks documents.

Shortly after publishing its initial report, ABC was forced to issue a crucial correction: Flynn actually planned to testify that Trump son-in-law Jared Kushner ordered him to reach out to representatives of the Russian government during the transition.

"We're going to cut right through the fake news media".

And now, a variation on that rule: They'll use every big mistake to allege that you have some nefarious motive in your reporting.

The email - sent the afternoon of September 14, 2016 - noted that "Wikileaks has uploaded another (huge 678 mb) archive of files from the DNC" and included a link and a "decryption key", according to a copy obtained by The Washington Post.

The full email - which was first described to CNN as being sent on September 4, 10 days earlier - indicates that the writer may have simply been flagging information that was already widely available. The new details appear to show that the sender was relying on publicly available information. It is also unclear if the email was a legitimate effort to provide the hacked documents to the Trump campaign.

After this story was published, The Washington Post obtained a copy of the email Friday afternoon and reported that the email urged Trump and his campaign to download archives that WikiLeaks had made public a day earlier.

CBS News also reported the incorrect date of the email as being September 4, instead of the real date of the email sent on September 14, and again, unnamed sources were cited. That was the very day, after all, that Trump Jr. first tweeted about WikiLeaks and Clinton.

The full email - which was first described to CNN as being sent on September 4, 10 days earlier - indicates that the writer may have simply been flagging information that was already widely available. Wikileaks published those documents online to the public on September 13, so the nine-day advance would seem like quite the scandal. Alan S. Futerfas, an attorney for Donald Trump Jr., told the Post that Erickson was unknown to the campaign and his email just one of "a ton of unsolicited emails like this on a variety of topics".

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange later tweeted that he did not see how WikiLeaks was connected to CNN's story.

This morning brought an absolute bombshell report from CNN. CNN said they were unable to contact the individual who provided the information. However, the email in question was actually sent on Sep.

CNN earlier this year forced the resignation of three staffers over a retracted report about Trump associate Anthony Scaramucci.
