The U.S. had already committed to attending the games, but U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley cast doubt on the issue Wednesday night when she told Fox News that it was an "open question".

"Anywhere we go I wish we didn't have to worry about what things could happen", said Jamie Greubel Poser, who won bronze in women's bobsled at the 2014 Sochi Olympics in Russian Federation. "We don't ever fear anything", Haley said. "We have that, and certainly that's a ideal opportunity for all of them to go and do something they worked so hard for".

According to the Washington Post, Haley said the United States will take "every precaution" to ensure the safety of its athletes.

Tensions between the US and North Korea have escalated over the course of the year because of North Korea's continuing efforts to develop nuclear weapons, including test firing potentially intercontinental missiles. Tensions between the United States and North Korea have been high over North Korea's nuclear missile program.

White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said that there has been no official decision on whether the United States will participate in the upcoming Winter Olympics in South Korea but then clarified that the U.S.is looking forward to the Games.

National security adviser H.R. McMaster said Saturday that the potential for war between the USA and North Korea is "increasing every day".

When asked whether she thought it would be safe for American athletes to compete in Pyeongchang, Haley said "it depends on what's going on at the time in the country".

"There is an open question", Haley said. "We plan on supporting two full delegations in Pyeongchang". "We have to watch this closely, and it is changing by the day".

"What have we always said?"

Global tensions are heating up as the Winter Olympics draw closer. "As a result, we are in close contact with numerous security agencies, including the U.S. State Department, which continues to advise us that it is safe for Americans to travel to South Korea".

A set of joint military exercises between the US and South Korea are scheduled to take part during March next year, despite it coming within the "Olympic Truce" window which is supposed to exist for the entire period of the Olympics and Paralympics.

A spokesperson for NBC, which will broadcast the games in the United States, said the network is monitoring the situation and it now has "no plans to change our preparation for the Games, which are in full swing".
