The domestic benchmark indices recovered from six-week lows as BSE Sensex gained as many as 352 points to 32,949.21 while Nifty50 ended the session at 10,166.70, up 123 points.

Both the benchmark indices surged more than a per cent.

After a strong start at 32,968.02, the Sensex reclaimed the 33,000-mark to hit a high of 33,008.62 points but profit- booking at higher levels capped the gains.

PSU Bank stocks too recovered from the previous session's losses, and Nifty PSU bank index ended 1.25 per cent higher at 3,798.55.

Out of 1,989 stocks traded on the NSE, 1,219 advanced, 474 declined and 296 remained unchanged today. Participants sensed value-buying opportunities after equities' recent lacklustre run, making stock valuations attractive, brokers said.

In the broader markets, the S&P BSE mid-cap index closed higher by 1.38 per cent and the small-cap index by 1.29 per cent.

The index had lost 205 points yesterday after the Reserve Bank held the policy rate and raised the inflation forecast for the remainder of the fiscal. However, RBI reiterating an economic growth of 6.7 per cent for FY18 uplifted the sentiment.

The rupee's weakness against the dollar too dampened the overall mood.

Other gainers were Asian Paints, Maruti Suzuki, Tata Steel, Bajaj Auto, NTPC, L&T, ICICI Bank, HUL, SBI, Tata Motors, Lupin, Adani Ports, Hero Motocorp, Power Grid and Infosys, rising by up to 3.29 per cent.

Losers included Coal India, TCS, Wipro, Cipla, Sun Pharma, Dr Reddy's and IndusInd Bank.
