Flu cases double as experts worry this season could be particularly bad

Dr. Pritish Tosh from the Mayo Clinic has declared for Daily Mail Online that he considers this year to be a bad flu one.

But flu viruses are constantly changing proteins on their surface to avoid being spotted, and the old technique is helping them. Flu reporting is largely voluntary and often inconsistent, Bennett said, so the weekly surveillance reports are "just a snapshot" that, examined over time, reveal seasonal trends. "We won't know what the number is here in the United States for several months", he said.

Matthew Maurer, Epidemiologist, says there are many various strains of the flu virus.

The U.S. sees 140,000 to 710,000 flu-related hospitalization each year and between 12,000 and 56,000 deaths each year, according to the World Health Organization.

The strain of flu causing the most illness in NY - influenza A H3N2 - is the same one that caused illnesses in a deadly wave south of the equator this year.

The flu season generally peaks between late November through March. And in Australia, which used the identical vaccine as Canada's this past season, its effectiveness against H3N2 infection was far less - only about 10 per cent. Not for two decades did Jonas Salk and Thomas Francis develop the first vaccine against flu viruses in 1938, though it was not available to the masses for another 7 years.

Meanwhile, the authors of NEJM report suggest a renewed effort to work toward better, more effective flu vaccines.

"This is the time to get a flu shot", said Mills. According to the CDC, the best way *not* to get the flu, is to get vaccinated.

Fauci said flu is inherently unpredictable, but all of the available evidence right now suggests that the flu season that begins in the USA this month won't be a light one.

"So given that, particularly for the H3N2 component, the vaccine effectiveness we're anticipating will be low", predicted Skowronski. Vaccination is recommended for at-risk populations including people over the age of 65, children younger than 5 years old, people with chronic health conditions such as asthma, diabetes and heart disease, along with pregnant women.

Getting the flu vaccine not only protects yourself, but the people around you as well. "Our immune system then gets to see it, to recognize it, and learn it so that if we ever get a natural virus infection, we're ready to respond".

No doubt, the flu vaccine has saved millions and millions of lives over the last 80 years, but it's still a bit of a crap-shoot year to year.
