"Fishermen around Lakshadweep and Kerala Coasts are advised not to venture into the sea during the next 24 hours", said IMD director S Sudevan.

Thiruvananthapuram: The Indian Coast Guard informed that the cyclone has moved towards Lakshadweep islands and intensified into "severe cyclonic storm" with wind reaching up to speed of 60 to 70 km.

A total of 357 fishermen, including 71 from Tamil Nadu, stranded in sea due to Cyclone Ockhi, were rescued, Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said on Sunday.

In addition, 2,384 fishermen and their 205 boats were rescued out of the 2,570 fishermen who had sailed in 284 boats from other places in the state, the statement said.

400 fishermen rescued as search continues.

The intensity of the cyclone is likely to weaken on Monday and subsequently on Tuesday.

The cyclone, which struck southern Tamil Nadu and Kerala on November 30, has ravaged a large part of coastal areas. However, 96 fishermen are still missing and a search is on to locate them. "There are indications that low-lying areas may see a water surge intermittently at Kollam, Alappuzha, Kochi, Ponnani, Kozhikode, Kannur and Kasaragod", said KSDMA officials. In Tamil Nadu, chief minister Edappadi K Palaniswamy announced Rs 25 crore for rescue, relief and rehabilitation works in the storm-hit Kanyakumari district. Talking to reporters after a meeting with CM Pinarayi Vijayan to review steps taken by the Centre and the state, Sitharaman said, "We want to make sure that each and every fishermen who had set sail from Kerala comes back safe".

The boats, now docked at Mirya Bunder in Ratnagiri were from Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Karnataka.

Naval ships, helicopters, Coast Guard vessels and Air Force planes are engaged in the rescue and relief operations and efforts are on to trace some 100 missing fishermen.

According to the statement, three ships and one aircraft of the Indian Coast Guard - Eastern Region were continuing with search and rescue operation off the Kanyakumari coast.
