  • The three-year-old's mother Kristy and her boyfriend

A missing 3-year-old North Carolina girl is believed to be dead and her mother's boyfriend has been arrested in connection to the disappearance that prompted an Amber Alert earlier this week.

32-year old Earl Kimrey, the boyfriend of the child's mother, has been arrested and charged with concealing death, obstruction of justice, and other charges.

Kimrey, who was in the Onslow County Detention Center on a $1 million bond, faces charges of concealing a death, obstruction of justice, second-degree burglary, larceny and possession of stolen property.

NBC affiliate WRAL that Kimrey lived in the home with Mariah and her mother. He told investigators the girl woke up and he told her to go back to sleep. "The searches will now shift to a recovery process".

Kimrey is now being held in the Onslow County Detention Center with bail set at $1,010,000. ABC News reports that her mother reached out to the public in an emotion-filled plea Monday. The warrant also says that Kimrey "secretly disposed of the dead child's body".

The statement did not say if Kimrey has a lawyer.

Investigators believe that Mariah is deceased due to evidence gathered throughout the investigation.

Also, FBI agents searched a landfill. The search for Mariah entered a fifth day Friday.

The search was organized in connection with the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children.

The FBI says they have been sending "items of interest" to their lab in Quantico, Virginia, for priority testing in the case.

"Sadly, it was too late to save Mariah the moment the 911 call came in", said FBI Senior Resident Agent Stanley Meador.

A statement from the Federal Bureau of Investigation said Friday's initial search finished more quickly than anticipated because of the number of people who turned out. On Friday morning, the search for 3-year-old Mariah intensified with a renewed effort that included hundreds of volunteers.

"The focus of this investigation has changed from a missing child to homicide case", Meador added.
