Donald Trump's former top adviser Michael Flynn pleaded guilty on Friday to lying over his contacts with Russian Federation, in a dramatic escalation of the FBI's probe into possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Moscow.

What has been shown is no collusion.

"Can you talk about what Michael Flynn might tell the special counsel?" a reporter asked Saturday morning as Trump crossed the White House lawn on his way to a fundraiser in New York City.

Flynn pleaded guilty Friday to lying to the Federal Bureau of Investigation about conversations with Russia's ambassador and disclosed that he is cooperating with the special counsel's office.

"No I'm not", Trump said in his first public remarks on the plea deal. During the campaign, Kislyak met several Trump aides, including then-Sen. Not only did a lengthy list of his own advisers make secret contact with Russian officials during the campaign, but his own family members did.

"I had to fire General Flynn because he lied to the Vice President and the FBI", Trump said. It's unclear what, if anything, Trump believes Flynn lied about, if he had nothing to hide.

This would blow up about a hundred Trump camp denials that there was coordinated high-level campaign contact with Russian Federation, and would suggest that Russia-related actions personally undertaken by Trump in 2016 (as opposed to merely the actions of his top lieutenants and/or family members) are under law enforcement scrutiny. "But the existence of the text messages is likely to fuel claims by Mr. Trump that the F.B.I. has a bias against him and that he is a target of the "deep state" - a term used to describe the notion that government intelligence agencies secretly conspire together".

Flynn also admitted that he spoke with another member of the transition team before he talked to Kislyak about US sanctions on December 29, court records say.

"Immediately upon learning of the allegations, the Special Counsel's Office removed Peter Strzok from the investigation", Special Counsel's Office spokesperson Peter Carr told BuzzFeed News.

"No, I'm not", Trump said when asked if he was anxious about what Michael Flynn will tell investigators.

Flynn resigned from his post February 13 and Comey testified before Senate Intelligence Committee that in a February 14 meeting in the White House - just a day after Flynn had left - Trump asked him to drop the investigation.

White House officials did not respond to questions on Saturday about Mr Trump's altered explanation as to why he fired Flynn.

After naming Flynn to head the National Security Council in January, Trump forced him from the position less than a month later.
