A new grand coalition for Germany

  • Martin Schulz's SDP has been under pressure to form an alliance with German Chancellor Angela Merkel's coalition and head off another electionMore

In a Facebook Live appearance, Schulz mentioned other possible options for the next government, including a minority administration and a coalition that would include the conservatives, the SPD and the Greens.

"This is simply wrong", Schulz said after the German newspaper Bild reported that the two parties had agreed to start talks on a new grand coalition after a meeting with President Frank-Walter Steinmeier on Thursday.

He added that whoever circulated such reports was damaging trust.

"We have several options for forming a government", he said.

"What I can tell you is that we discussed the situation at the SPD party board meeting intensively". He had called the chancellor to complain about "inacceptable" leaks to the press, the Social Democrat leader said.

Should it come to grand coalition negotiations, Schulz indicated he would push for the new government to become even more engaged at the European level, including standing behind French President Emmanuel Macron's push for broad reforms. "We should discuss each of these options", he said, and ruled out any hasty decisions under time pressure. Steinmeier and Merkel are both keen to prevent the need for re-elections, leaving a re-launch of the acting "grand coalition" between the CDU/CSU and SPD as the only plausible alternative.

According to Schulz, the key demands of his party are a need to reform the European Union, improve healthcare, as well as the European Union and answer French President Emmanuel Macron's Eurozone reform proposals positively.

Ahead of that congress, which will also decide whether to re-elect Schulz as chief of the SPD, the party's top brass has been careful to tread softly regarding its options.

On Friday, her party reiterated that stance, with the CDU's Klaus Schueler saying after a telephone conference of the party leadership: "The CDU is ready to hold serious talks with the SPD to build a stable government". But for the SPD the situation isn't almost as clear.

Martin Schulz, the leader of the rival Social Democrats (SPD), told an interview with Spiegel magazine he would insist on deeper integration as a condition of joining any new government under Mrs Merkel.
