  • Israeli army strikes Gaza after alleged rocket fire

Israel said it had targeted resistance sites in the norther Gaza Strip with a guided missile and a number or mortar shells this afternoon. At least two Palestinians were injured, according to Gaza's Health Ministry. The IDF claims it is retaliation for a mortar shelling of an Israeli outpost by another militant group. However, The Israeli military later said the sirens were a false alarm.

The attack was carried out in response to high-trajectory fire at an IDF post in the northern Gaza Strip.

The IDF says it does not want an escalation of tensions following a series of strikes on several Hamas targets in the Gaza Strip on Thursday.

There are a number of militant groups operating in the Gaza Strip, but Israel holds Islamist movement Hamas responsible for most such incidents.

In a brief joint statement, Fatah and Hamas said they had asked Egypt to delay the timetable from Dec 1 so that they could "complete the arrangements to successfully conclude reconciliation steps to which the Palestinian people aspire", Reuters reported. Later on Thursday evening, the army said it also had struck two "terror infrastructure targets".

Hamas has controlled the Gaza Strip since seizing it in 2007 in a near civil war with Fatah, leaving Palestinians with two separate administrations.

Daud Shehab, the leader of Islamic Jihad in Gaza, said the "Zionist aggression" was an attempt to distract from the killing of a Palestinian man in the West Bank by settlers earlier in the day.

In late October, the IDF blew up a tunnel stretching from the Gaza Strip into Israeli territory. A total of 67 Israeli soldiers and six Israeli civilians were killed in the conflict, while 2,251 Palestinians died, according to the United Nations.
