Uber breach affected 2.7 million Britons

  • Washington state sues Uber for millions over data breach cover up

Washington state Attorney General Bob Ferguson is suing Uber for failing to disclose a massive data breach that left the personal information of 57 million people exposed. Uber is expected to begin reaching out to those affected shortly to notify them.

Central to the lawsuit are claims that Uber failed to protect its data and, once the breach occurred, actively went out of its way to hide this.

No financial details or journey records were taken by the attackers, who were paid $100,000 to delete the files, but some personal information was stolen and there are no guarantees the data was indeed destroyed.

The statement also says that the government "takes both the protection of personal data and the right to privacy extremely seriously".

A spokesman for Uber told the BBC the firm is not able to clarify how many United Kingdom drivers are included in the 2.7 million.

Uber users and drivers in this country accounted for almost half of the 57 million total affected by the hack on its systems, which was covered up for more than a year.

"As part of our investigation we are still waiting for technical reports which should give full confirmation of the figures and the type of personal data that has been compromised".

The data breach resulted in almost 11,000 Washington Uber drivers having their data compromised.

Uber failed to disclose a massive breach a year ago, which disclosed the data of some 57 million users, the company's new chief executive officer said last week, according to Reuters.

In Britain, Uber drew around 2.85 million users, on average, over the past three months, according to web and mobile app traffic measurement firm SimilarWeb, indicating that most British Uber users were likely caught up in the breach.

"Uber's conduct has been truly stunning".

The lawsuit was filed Tuesday in King County Superior Court.

Ferguson's lawsuit seeks penalties of up to $2,000 per violation of the state's data-breach-notification law.

"We are committed to changing the way we do business, putting integrity at the core of every decision we make and working hard to regain the trust of consumers", said Nathan Hambley, an Uber spokesman.
