Black Friday Was A Big Day for Gun Sales

  • Black Friday Was A Big Day for Gun Sales

However, USA TODAY noted that while a background check may show an arrest record, it doesn't provide additional details on whether the case was resolved or resulted in a felony conviction, which would've also blocked a gun purchase. The National Instant Criminal Background Check System, which allows most shoppers to buy a gun in minutes, is struggling under demand that has risen from 1 million requests for checks in 1998 to a record 27.5 million previous year, NPR reports. As was the case, Federal Bureau of Investigation officials must know whether a person is eligible for a gun purchase within the three-day period for each check. The FBI reported 203,000 background checks for gun sales on Friday.

According to CNN, firearms dealers were hoping that rebates and deep discounts would lure in customers on Black Friday and boost recently slagging sales.

While background checks are a requirement for any gun purchase made through a federally-licensed firearm dealer, they can't necessarily estimate the number of firearms actually sold.

The review was ordered by Attorney General Jeff Sessions following revelations that a gun rampage at a Texas church which left 26 people dead was committed by a former United States airman who had been legally stripped of his right to own weapons. However, a 2015 Time magazine report suggested that mass shootings could increase gun sales: "Spikes in gun sales regularly occur following mass shootings, often over concerns of increased gun regulation or because people are looking for increased protection", Time reported.

The new record comes several weeks after a Texas church shooting left 26 dead and placed the national background check system in the spotlight. Reports that the shooter, a court-martialed Air Force veteran, cleared a background check enabling him to buy his weapon have spurred renewed debate about gun control.

While many Americans were buying furniture and appliances on Black Friday, a record number were also seeking clearance to purchase guns.

Mr Obama had previously told BBC News that his biggest regret as president was not passing "meaningful" gun reform during his time in office.
