Dan Mullen Targeted By Gators

  • Dan Mullen Targeted By Gators

Mullen is 69-46 in nine years as the Bulldogs' head coach and it just six wins shy of tying Jackie Sherrill's all-time mark for most career wins at the school.

Mullen replaces Jim McElwain, who was sacked in midseason.

All along, Florida officials have wondered whether Mullen would be the best fit because of his time at the school, his SEC experience and his success developing quarterbacks. He was a part of two national championship teams in 2006 and 2008, when he served as Urban Meyer's offensive coordinator.

Multiple sources on the UT campus, as well as people close to members of UT's Board of Trustees, indicate that first-year athletics director John Currie could potentially wrap up his search by the close of the weekend or first of next week. Assuming this deal gets done, Mullen will be reunited with AD Scott Stricklin, who worked with the coach from 2010-2016 when he was serving in that capacity at Mississippi State. He's now deciding whether to take the open Nebraska job or stay at UCF. Foley and Mullen did not have a strong relationship during his time as Florida's coordinator.

Mississippi State knows Dan Mullen is a pretty hot commodity these days and is prepared to "go all in" to try and keep him in Starkville, a source told SI Friday morning.

Some might be concerned about whether Mullen has the ideal personality to bring genuine buzz to Florida football, but do you really care as long as he fixes the offense?

Mullen helped develop quarterbacks Alex Smith, Tim Tebow and Dak Prescott.

Florida fired McElwain under odd circumstances in late October after McElwain made a vague reference to death threats in a press conference and refused to provide details of them to Florida officials.
