Earlier, the Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Qamar Javed Bajwa telephoned Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi and discussed the ongoing situation regarding the crackdown on protesters in Islamabad.

Six people were killed and 200, mostly police, were injured as police tried to clear the intersection linking the Pakistani capital with the garrison city of Rawalpindi, doctors at local hospitals said.

Dawn and Geo News reported that there are prison vans, ambulances at the site. They also ransacked a newly built metro bus terminal near the venue.

After Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) ordered to take all news channels off air, social media access via internet browsers to Facebook, Youtube and Twitter were also temporarily blocked on Saturday.

Video from the scene Saturday showed law enforcement forces carrying sticks and firing tear gas and rubber bullets at protesters. A mob attacked former Interior Minister Nisar Ali Khan's house in Rawalpindi and broke the main gate of his house.

Ahsan Iqbal said that protesters had been holding Twin Cities of Islamabad and Rawalpindi hostage for last 20 days, adding that few elements were misleading innocent minds.

In Karachi, the country's commercial hub, 28 injured were brought to the state-run Jinnah Post Medical Center, according to a hospital spokesman. The protest which has been on for the last three weeks demanding that the law minister Zahid Hamid steps down, claimed that the modification was part of a larger conspiracy even as the government called it a clerical error.

It is feared that protests will continue on Sunday as well.
