  • World Leaders Condemn Egypt Mosque Attacks, Calls For Collective Action Against Terrorism

The majority of those killed in the attack are civilians.

No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack.

El-Sisi said that Egypt is facing terrorism alone, on behalf of the region and the whole world, and said that events in Sinai are "an attempt to break our will", and to end Egypt's efforts "to terminate the terrorist plan that is aiming to destroy what is left of the region". Sufis are considered by Islamic fundamentalists to be apostates and are frequently the target of Islamic militants.

Witnesses said bomb explosion ripped through the Rawda mosque as worshippers gathered for weekly Friday prayers.

The attack started when an explosive went off in a building adjacent to the mosque, and gunmen fired at worshippers as they fled, eyewitnesses told CNN.

President Donald Trump, in a tweet, called the attack "horrible and cowardly terrorist attack on innocent and defenseless worshipers in Egypt".

"The world can not tolerate terrorism, we must defeat them militarily and discredit the extremist ideology that forms the basis of their existence!" the president said.

Sisi, a former armed forces commander who presents himself as a bulwark against Islamist militancy, convened an emergency meeting with his defence and interior ministers and intelligence chief soon after the attack.

"There is no difference between terrorism harming Egypt and terrorism harming other countries".

A tribal leader and head of a Bedouin militia that fights IS said that the mosque is known as a place of gathering for Sufis.

Local militant group Ansar Bayt al-Maqdis, once allied to al-Qaida, split from it and declared allegiance to Islamic State in 2014.

Islamic militants stepped up their campaign of violence in northern Sinai after the military ousted the Muslim Brotherhood from power in 2013.

The conflict has killed hundreds of soldiers and militants over the years, although journalists are banned from the area and exact numbers are unclear. In September, Trump promoted the travel ban as well as his own accomplishments in response to the deadly terror attack in London.

There have been a wave of attacks on the country's Coptic Christian minority, but attacks on mosques are rare in Egypt.
