In the same way it's not surprising that Rose's injury riddled career is frustrating him and causing him mental distress, it's not surprising he might be considering calling it quits.

Rose has been non-communicative to multiple people close to him inside and outside of the Cavaliers in recent days, league sources said, and there is growing uncertainty about whether he will return to the team. He was averaging 14.3 points per game in his seven games this season. His departure this time is different, a Cavs spokesman told the ESPN writers, because he informed the team that he would be stepping away and is not an active player with the ankle injury.

According to ESPN, Rose is re-evaluating his future in the National Basketball Association.

However, injuries have derailed his career over the last few seasons.

A team spokesperson said Rose's absence is excused. His injury woes began in April 2012 when he tore his ACL during the latter moment of a playoff game that had already been decided. The contract is not fully guaranteed if Rose retires. He returned to play in five games but suffered a setback on November 7 and hasn't played since.

Rose, 29, has played in just seven games this season due to complications from a sprained left ankle initially suffered October 20.

Now that Thomas is nearing a return, and Dwyane Wade is succeeding as the point guard on the Cavs' second unit, it was becoming increasingly hard to see where Rose fit on this team when he did come back from injury. One week ago, the Cavaliers released a formal statement regarding the matter saying that Rose's progress would be reevaluated in two weeks.

Rose had been wearing a walking boot and undergoing treatment.
