CBS and Dish Network cut deal to end three-day blackout

25 November, 2017, 01:13 | Author: Priscilla Morrison
  • Dish Network customers lost access to their CBS channels for three days this week before Dish and CBS ended their dispute over carriage fees Thursday night

Video distributors such as Dish have to pay a per-subscriber carriage fee for the right to broadcast networks such as CBS. Those channels - CBS Sports Network, Pop and the Smithsonian Channel - had also gone dark and are now back to normal for Dish customers.

Dish Network subscribers once again have access to CBS following the brief service blackout resulting from an expired contract between the two.

"We are pleased we have reached a deal with Dish, who recognizes the value that the number one network brings to viewers in these markets", Ray Hopkins, CBS' president of television networks distribution, said in a statement. On the site, Dish alleges CBS is asking the satellite operator to pay "more than 50 percent higher than what we now pay to carry this channel". Those customers went without their local CBS station on Thanksgiving, aggravating sports fans who missed seeing the Chargers defeat the Dallas Cowboys in Dallas. The blackout happened late Monday night, the latest instance of CBS and Dish Network's business relations souring. The blackout severely impacted several major markets including New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Atlanta and Boston. These alternatives make CBS widely available, without the need for a pay-TV subscription, which Dish has clearly taken issue with during these negotiations.

CBS officials said they, too were happy that the tiff was over. "Our customers are clear: they don't want to pay a CBS tax". CBS told Deadline "we remain far apart on terms" and stated Dish was "desperate to retain subscribers".
