Uber hacked, didn't say a word for a year

  • Uber hacked, data for 57 million people exposed

57 million riders and drivers were affected by a 2016 data breach, which Uber attempted to cover up by paying off the hackers to stay silent. In a coincidentally timed announcement shortly before Uber's hacking disclosure Tuesday, Whitman said she was stepping down as head of Hewlett Packard Enterprise Co.

In October 2016, Uber suffered a huge data hack that affected 57 million customers and drivers.

A spokesman from Uber said the company is in the process of notifying various regulatory and government authorities.

Uber did not confirm details of the hack, but according to Bloomberg, two hackers accessed to a private area of Github, an online resource for developers, and found Uber's log-in credentials to Amazon Web Services, a B2B cloud computing service that stores data.

"The fact is there is absolutely no guarantee the hackers didn't create multiple copies of the stolen data for future extortion or to sell on further down the line", he said. It was also revealed that license numbers of drivers which were stolen will be offered free identity theft protection and credit monitoring. Uber, under new management, is desperately trying to make up for past mistakes. I had the same question, so I immediately asked for a thorough investigation of what happened and how we handled it.

"The reality is that companies today exist in a state of continuous compromise". Is a ransomware attack technically a data breach?

Should we all just assume our data is lost?

"But rather than fear the breach, organisations need to prepare with a defined, well-practiced response strategy that involves security teams, legal, executive leadership, and communications/PR support", he said. We think this was wrong, which is why we are now taking the actions we've described.

"None of this should have happened, and I will not make excuses for it", Dara Khosrowshahi, who Uber named as CEO in September, said in a statement.

Dan Panesar, vice-president for Certes Networks in Europe, said transparency is crucial when it comes to the loss of personal data. ("In the past, we were a bit aggressive", he told a Brazilian newspaper.) And now the mishandled data breach. Guruswamy said. "It sounds to me like the $100,000 went, not to protect the consumers, but to keep it from getting out in the news". It may have been because the information was easy for hackers to access on account of Uber's engineers being lax with security online (according to some reports), but regardless, the secrecy around the payout is pretty bad.

News of the leak comes on the heels of revelations the Australian Broadcasting Corporation accidentally exposed Amazon Web Services S3 bucket containing a large amount of user data - an error that also recently led to almost 50,000 Australians' PII being leaked online by a government contractor. Many companies continue to kick security own-goals through poorly-managed use of cloud services, with cloud-visibility tools surging in popularity as security managers learn the hard way that they can't take cloud security for granted.

Khosrowshahi made no mention of whether Uber riders whose information was hacked are being contacted.
