"Our immigrant communities deserve the chance to live, study, and work in the United States without constant fear of deportation", said Assembly Member Felix W. Ortiz, Assistant Speaker.

Kobach, who writes for Breitbart News, told the hard-right outlet that a decision to give Haitian nationals 18 months to remain in the United States despite terminating their protected status, known as Temporary Protected Status, undermined the Trump administration's immigration principles. Still pending is a decision about the fate of more than 212,000 people from El Salvador, by far the largest group.

At least 60 days before TPS is set to expire, the Homeland Security secretary must review the conditions for the status designation and decide if protection is still warranted.

Haitians with TPS will be required to reapply for Employment Authorization Documents in order to legally work in the United States until the end of the respective termination or extension periods.

In 2017 alone, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services conducted extensive outreach to the Haitian communities throughout the country.

A Facebook page organizing the protest said they want the Temporary Protection Status renewed for all immigrants from Haiti and Central America while also asking for a "clean" Dream Act for children of immigrants. They contribute to their communities. Many Haitians depend on the financial support from family members overseas, which amounted to $2.4 billion in 2016 and has grown steadily every year since 1998.

Jean Claude Mompoint, a Valley Stream resident who has a cleaning job at a Brooklyn home for disabled people and has worked a second job transporting people in wheelchairs at LaGuardia Airport, said the prospects are scary without TPS. Since then, almost 800,000 Haitians have contracted cholera, resulting in 10,000 deaths from the disease alone.

"I travelled to #Haiti after the natural disaster in 2010 and after hurricane Matthew in 2016". As a result, access to clean water is limited. According to the World Bank, $2.3 billion was received by Haiti in 2016, and personal remittances accounted for 29% of the country's GDP though not all were from those residing in the US.

To add to the current situation, the Haitian National Police is not fully equipped to confront current security challenges. A year after Hurricane Matthew, people in South Haiti are still living in tents.

Haiti, the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere, is still struggling to rebuild from the disastrous 7-magnitude quake that struck the nation on January 12, 2010, killing over 100,000 people. He said he'll go back to Haiti if he must, but doesn't know how he'll support his wife and three children there. As Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Subcommittee on the Western Hemisphere and as a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, I continue to strongly support USA initiatives that promote good governance and security, combat poverty and health epidemics, and advance economic opportunities for the people of Haiti.

The 18-month deadline, Duke said, will allow for an "orderly transition", permitting the Haitians to "arrange their departure", and their government to prepare for their arrival.

Almost 12,000 children and another 5,700 adults enrolled in the school system are impacted by the TPS decision, Carvalho said at a news conference Tuesday.
