Trump's sickening decision to stand by Roy Moore

  • Trump's sickening decision to stand by Roy Moore

But he was unusually quiet when it came to the scandal enveloping Alabama Republican Roy Moore's Senate campaign, only addressing it directly a week after returning to the United States - on Tuesday afternoon - when he told reporters outside the White House he was standing by the GOP nominee. "We'll have to let you know next week", he told reporters.

The President also expressed vehement opposition to Doug Jones, the Democrat in the race and Moore's only major opponent.

"I've looked at his record, it's bad on crime, it's awful on the border, it's awful on the military", Trump said of Jones, ahead of the December 12 election.

Trump's defense of Moore stands in stark contrast to the approach taken by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and a number of other Republican senators, who have said that they can not support Moore's candidacy and that he should withdraw from the race. He totally denies it.

Moore has seen his campaign derailed in recent days after nine women accused him of behavior ranging from uncomfortable and unwanted overtures to sexual assault.

Trump said he will announce next week whether he will campaign on Moore's behalf. "He says it didn't happen and you have to listen to him, also".

But Trump on Tuesday left the door open to campaigning with Moore.

Trump declined to answer Tuesday when asked why he does not believe Moore's accusers.

Trump's comments come the day after his senior adviser Kellyanne Conway appeared on Fox News to say pretty much the same thing. Shelby, a Republican, said he will "absolutely not" vote for Moore. But he ill-advisedly shifted to the claim that "you don't need somebody who's soft on crime like Jones". That's all I can say, he denies it. The October 2016 release of the "Access Hollywood" tape revealed that Trump bragged in in 2005 that he could grope and forcibly kiss women without their consent. "He will be a vote against tax cuts".

DuPré sought to cast doubt on Leigh Corfman, who has said Moore molested her when she was 14 years old.

The special election for the Alabama Senate seat is December 12. Republicans have a slim 52-48 majority in the Senate.

"He was afraid to go against Roy Moore because he thought he would lose again", Heilemann said. "I just don't think that is the direction for the party".
