President, PM condole death of Congress leader Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi

"He had been critically ill for the past one month and unfortunately succumbed to his illness", privately owned Apollo Hospital said in a statement.

Dasmunsi is survived by his wife Deepa and son Priyadeep who were at his bedside at the time of his passing.

New Delhi Congress president Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury has informed Sonia Gandhi about Dasmunsi's demise.

Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi also condoled the death of the veteran politician. "His death is an irreparable loss to the Congress party and the country", she said.

Dasmunsi was heading the Indian football governing body at the time of his stroke in 2008, which led to Praful Patel taking over as president.

"Shri Priya Ranjan Dasmunshi was a popular leader with rich political and administrative experience". Dasmunshi, also a diabetic, suffered the heart attack the same year in July on way to Kolkata from Malda district in northwest Bengal, after attending a Congress party meeting. Later he was shifted to home, and in 2009 he was admitted to Apollo Hospital here. "He will be greatly remembered for his contributions, especially to Indian Football", @INCIndia, the official Twitter account of the Congress tweeted.

President and leader of the Congress party, has died at the age of 72.

Senior CPM leader and present Raiganj MP Md Salim said Dasmunsi build up Congress organisation in the state without issuing threats as witnessed in contemporary Bengal politics.

Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi was the Union Minister in 1985. Otherwise he could have done more in his political life.

Dasmunshi was admitted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) on 12 October 2008, after he complained of breathlessness and severe chest pain.

He was the cabinet minister in Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs and Ministry of Information and Broadcasting during the first term of PM Manmohan Singh. He won from Raiganj Lok Sabha constituency in North Bengal in 1999 which he held on to till 2008.
