The quake struck at 11:43am (NZT) at a depth of 25km close to the Loyalty Islands, according to the US Geological Service.

Residents of Vanuatu and New Caledonia were told to brace for possible tsunamis, following a magnitude 7.0 quake that struck 50 miles east of the Loyalty Islands in the South Pacific.

The Pacific Tsunami Centre warns of "possible" hazardous waves within 300 kilometres of the epicentre. The Tsunami waves which observed by the Pacific Warning centre is as high as one metre above the high tide mark are forecast to hit New Caledonia.

Local NCI broadcaster reported the evacuation was ordered for coastal areas in New Caledonia and the southern provinces of the Vanuatu archipelago, located north of the epicenter.

"Government agencies responsible for threatened coastal areas should take action to inform and instruct any coastal populations at risk", the PTWC said in an alert.

New Caledonia is about 2300km north of New Zealand.

PTWC is now issuing the latest message saying that the tsunami threat has passed.
