Donald Trump Says He Should Have Left UCLA Players Jailed In China

  • President Trump to La Var Ball I Should Have Left Your Kid in Jail

The president accused LaVar Ball, the father of one of the players, of being "unaccepting" of Trump's personal intervention in the matter.

President Donald Trump directed a message at LaVar Ball on Twitter on Sunday, less than 24 hours after Ball downplayed the President's role in helping Ball's son, LiAngelo, and two other UCLA basketball players return to the United States safely after they were arrested in China for shoplifting. Like I told him, "They try to make a big deal out of nothing sometimes".

Balls's son LiAngelo, as well as Jalen Hill and Cody Riley were detained in Hangzhou, about 100 miles southwest of Shanghai, on shoplifting charges a day before Trump arrived in China for his Asia tour.

LiAngelo and his teammates were arrested last Tuesday for allegedly shoplifting near the UCLA team's hotel in China, and there were rumors they could spend up to 10 years in prison.

"Who?" Ball told ESPN on Friday.

"What was he over there for?"

Freshman LiAngelo Ball was detained along with Jalen Hill and Cody Riley almost two weeks ago and returned last week after Trump said he had a long conversation with Chinese President Xi Jinping about the incident. "Everybody wants to make it seem like he helped me out", he continued. "Be careful, there are many pitfalls on the long and winding road of life!"

That's what watching LaVar vs. Trump unfold feels like. Don't tell me nothing. POTUS demanded praise immediately, and wondered on Twitter if the three players would bother thanking him.

White House Director of Social Media and Assistant to the President Dan Scavino Jr.

Ball's comments, while not particularly gracious given the circumstances, once again proved no slight is too small to pierce the president's thin candy shell.

"As long as my boy's back here, I'm fine", he said.

On Wednesday, UCLA coach Steve Alford announced the players were suspended indefinitely. "I'm happy with how things were handled".

Fredricka Whitfield spoke with Stelter this afternoon on how "the way this President prioritizes is very confusing to a lot of people".
