  • Malcolm Young dead at 64

Legendary Australian guitarist and AC/DC co-founder Malcolm Young has died aged 64.

Some of the band's most popular songs include "Back in Black", "Thunderstruck", "Hells Bells", "You Shook me all Night Long" and "For Those About to Rock". "As a brother, it is hard for me to say with words what he has meant in my life".

AC/DC - which was also co-founded by Malcolm's younger brother Angus - confirmed the sad news in a Facebook post uploaded to the site shortly after Malcolm's passing, in which they did not disclose the star's cause of death.

Young's last appearance with his band was in 2010 in Bilbao, Spain; in 2014, Angus told Rolling Stonethat there had been signs of his brother's deteriorating condition for at least six years, even before the 2008 album Black Ice was made, and Malcolm was having problems with his memory and concentration. From the beginning, he always knew what he wanted to accomplish, and with his younger brother, he has conquered the music scene by giving the best of himself at every concert. George Young had served as producer to AC/DC and guitarist for the band Easybeats. The albums were produced by brother George and his songwriting partner Harry Vanda, who brought out the pop sensibilities in the band's crushing template. The album became the band's first record to break the U.S. Top 100 and is the bands second highest selling album, behind the 1980 hard rock classic "Back in Black".

One of the founding members of AC/DC, among the best-selling bands in recorded music history, died Saturday.

Yet their music vaulted into another realm when they united with producer Robert John "Mutt" Lange - who at that point had worked mostly with British alternative acts but would later craft multiplatinum albums for Def Leppard and Shania Twain - for the 1979 album "Highway to Hell". Singer Brian Johnson joined the band in Scott's stead; when Back in Black was released, it went to No. 4 on the Billboard album chart, and eventually sold 22 million copies in the US alone. "I toured with AC/DC on their "Stiff Upper Lip" tour". For those about to rock, we salute you. Still, the band remained a formidable touring force and continued to pack in giant crowds across the globe, its crushing sound and simple lyrics needing no translation. Malcolm had been battling Dementia for the past few years.

On Saturday morning Twitter was filled with tributes to him, from Ozzy Osbourne and Eddie Van Halen to Zac Brown and Ryan Adams.
