Danica Patrick to Retire After Indy 500

18 November, 2017, 00:55 | Author: Carla Brady
  • Patrick last raced in the Indy 500 in 2011

Patrick spent seven years in the IndyCar series between 2005 and 2011, racing for Rahal Letterman Racing, Andretti Green Racing, and Andretti Autosport. It took her several months to accept that her career was essentially over after months of failing to line up sponsorship for next year.

Again, however, much like the case is for her Daytona 500 effort, Patrick did not say the team for which she would be driving in the Indianapolis 500.

Nothing that was being presented excited me, then about three weeks ago, I just blurted out, "What about Indy?"

"I was talking to my agent, Alan (Zucker) about how I wasn't having any fun this year", Patrick said. Let's end it with the Indy 500.

An emotional Danica Patrick announces this will be her final season as a full-time driver.

What teams Patrick would driver for in each race remain a mystery. In the meantime, her fans know that if all goes according to plan, they'll be able to see her race Sunday at Homestead and then in the two biggest contests of 2018 before they bid her adieu. Her highest finish was third in 2009, and she was the first woman to lead laps in the race when she paced the field for 19 trips around the Brickyard as a rookie. Her victory in the 2008 Japan 300 remains the only win by a female racer in Verizon IndyCar Series history. She can't go back to Stewart-Haas Racing, her soon-to-be-ex-team, since that organization will already be fielding four cars at the 2018 Daytona 500.

"I don't feel like I was necessarily pushed into this".
