Coleman quits as Wales manager, poised for Sunderland job

  • Chris Coleman has quit Wales to take over at Sunderland

Sunderland have turned their attention to Chris Coleman as they consider candidates to become their new manager.

However, he was unable to build on the momentum from their successful France 2016 campaign and qualify the team for next summer's 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia™.

"Kit Symons has also resigned from his position as National Team Coach and the FAW would like to put on record its gratitude for his commitment to the Wales National Team".

But Coleman was to lead Wales to their first major tournament for 58 years and took them to the semi-finals of Euro 2016.

"We wish Chris the very best of luck for the future as he returns to club management, a desire for which he has always been honest and open about".

Heckingbottom was a trainee at Sunderland, but it emerged on Friday that he was not in consideration.

They are understood to have held talks with Barnsley boss Paul Heckingbottom and were also interested in Northern Ireland manager Michael O'Neill as they searched for a successor to the sacked Simon Grayson.

Coleman would be the Black Cats' fifth permanent manager since March 2015.

And he is due to be in charge of the Championship club by Sunday after agreeing a £750,000-a-year deal.

But it appears the lure of a return to club management after five years away proved strong for 47-year-old former Fulham boss Coleman.

He took them to ninth in the Premier League but lost his job in 2007 and moved to Real Sociedad.

Coleman is understood to have met with the Welsh FA earlier on Friday - a month after Wales missed out on qualification to next year's World Cup in Russian Federation - and informed them of his decision. He also had short spells overseas with Real Sociedad and AEL Athens.
