Apple is working to keep its Siri voice assistant relevant in the face of competition from Amazon's Alexa and Alphabet Inc's Google Assistant, both of which are featured on smart speakers from those companies.

Apple introduced the voice-controlled HomePod in June.

Remember Apple's smart speaker it was planning to release called HomePod?

Apple may be missing the holiday shopping season by delaying its HomePod until 2018, but that decision could pay dividends if it makes Siri a better assistant.

VentureBeat has reached out to Apple for further comment on the cause of the delay. Amazon invented the category in 2015 with the Echo, and there are now similar options available from Google, Microsoft and Sonos. We'll start shipping in the USA, United Kingdom and Australia in early 2018. Apple said that its smart speaker will be able to control home appliances and take basic orders. At $329, HomePod was poised to be one of the pricier smart speakers on the market, but it touts superior sound quality.

If you were planning on purchasing the Apple HomePod next month, you are going to have to wait.

The HomePod was first announced in June and is seen as Apple's answer to the popular smart speakers already on the market, most notably the Amazon Echo and Google Home.
