Sessions raises prospect of special counsel on GOP concerns

Sessions, an early Trump backer who led the foreign policy council during the campaign, has been shadowed for months by questions about his own communications with Russians and by contacts of others in the Trump orbit.

But he does not recall the details of what Mr Papadopoulos said, Mr Sessions testified before the House Judiciary Committee.

"Nobody! Nobody - not you or anyone else, should be prosecuted, not me.for answering a question the way I did in this hearing". Sessions supervised the advisory group on which Papadopoulos sat and reportedly rejected his suggestion for Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin to meet.

Sessions came under fire last month after a former campaign advisor to U.S. President Donald Trump, George Papadopoulos pleaded guilty to misleading investigators about his involvement with Russian Federation.

Mr Page's trip has drawn scrutiny in inquiries into Russia's meddling in the 2016 United States election.

"I believe that I wanted to make clear that he wasn't authorized to represent the campaign with the Russian government, or any other foreign government, for that matter", he testified. "But I did not recall the event, which occurred 18 months before my testimony of a few weeks ago".

"We know the Clinton campaign, the Democrat National Committee, paid for through the law firm, paid for the dossier".

Sessions had said during his January Senate confirmation hearing that he was unaware of communications between the campaign and Russian Federation.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions has directed federal prosecutors to "evaluate certain issues" involving Hillary Clinton's alleged corruption in a deal which gave Russian company Rosatom control over 20 percent of America's uranium supply.

At today's congressional hearing with Attorney General Jeff Sessions, House Judiciary Committee Chairman Bob Goodlatte, R-Va., renewed his request for the appointment of second special counsel - this one to investigate the operations of the Clinton Foundation and a sale of a uranium company to Russian Federation, among other issues.

One of the attendees at that meeting, J.D. Gordon, recalled that Sessions quickly "shut him down and said, 'We're not going to do that'".

Numerous items Goodlatte wanted probed had always been conservative talking points, some having to do with matters many considered long resolved: various decisions made in the Clinton email case, the Uranium One purchase, the so-called "unmasking" of people by the intelligence committee, and allegations, which officials have said were untrue, by Trump that he was wiretapped by his predecessors.

Testimony before Congress has proved to be something of a thorn in Sessions's side.

Sessions said although his Justice Department will consider investigations into Hillary Clinton, he could not say whether he would recuse himself from the matter, contradicting his previous statements on the matter.

The Post later reported that Russia's ambassador to Washington told his superiors that he and Sessions discussed campaign-related matters, including policy issues important to Moscow.

It also comes a day after the Justice Department told the chair of the committee, Rep. "And none of you had a part in the Trump campaign", Sessions said.

"It's time for Jeff Sessions to name a Special Counsel and get answers for the American people". Page has said that the interaction was brief and forgettable and that his trip was unconnected to his campaign work. Sessions is leaving open the possibility that a special counsel could be appointed to look into Clinton Foundation dealings and an Obama-era uranium deal.
