Tillerson said that eventually there would be a day when the USA and the North decide it's a good time to have that first conversation that would lead to negotiations.

"Might be a unusual thing to happen but it's certainly a possibility", Trump said during a press conference with Vietnam's president, adding that it would be "very, every nice if it did. But it is certainly a possibility", Trump said.

Though an armistice ceased fighting in that conflict, no peace treaty has ever been signed, and North Korea still tensely face off with South Korean and USA forces at the demilitarized zone that splits the Korean peninsula at the 38th parallel.

President Donald Trump is exchanging school yard taunts with North Korea's Kim Jong Un.

After North Korea's Foreign Minister Ri Yong Ho addressed the UN General Assembly in September Trump tweeted: "Just heard Foreign Minister of North Korea speak at UN".

North Korean officials described Trump's trip as "nothing but a business trip by a warmonger to enrich the monopolies of the U.S. defense industry".

Asked if he could see himself being friends with Kim, Trump said: "That might be a unusual thing to happen but it's a possibility".

Joseph Yun, Washington's top North Korean official, was reported by the Washington Post as saying last month that if the regime halted nuclear and missile testing for about 60 days, that would be the signal the USA needs to resume direct dialogue with Pyongyang.

"They [North Korea] likely understand that - unlike visits of high-level officials - to do an ICBM while the president is in the region is a bigger gamble", said Jenny Town, managing editor of 38 North, a website devoted to analysis on North Korea.

In September Kim described Trump as a mentally deranged United States dotard - a word used to refer to a weak and senile old person - whom he would tame with fire.

This isn't the first time Trump and Kim have traded barbs.

Kim responded to those jabs with an insult of his own, saying in a statement aimed at Trump that "I will surely and definitely tame the mentally deranged U.S. dotard with fire".

In the White House briefing room last week, Trump's national security adviser H.R. McMaster told reporters the administration would wait "a few months" before reassessing their strategy.
