The organizer of the "Unite the Right" rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, in August that left one woman dead, was verified on Twitter Tuesday, the Daily Beast reported. "I must be the only working-class white advocate with that distinction".

In the aftermath of Ms Heyer's death, he used the platform to call her a "fat, disgusting Communist" and described her murder as "payback time". When verified Twitter users engage with other users on the platform, their engagement is more likely to send a notification, and verified users have the option to only get notifications from other verified users. Richard Spencer, who argued in an interview with a British journalist this week that the trans-Atlantic slave trade was good for Africans, is verified.

While the literal meaning of a check mark was about verifying identity, having a check mark has also evolved into a pseudo endorsement from the company - a confirmation that Twitter valued someone as important. "We have paused all general verifications while we work and will report back soon", read a tweet from @TwitterSupport account.

'Our agents have been following our verification policy correctly, but we realised some time ago the system is broken and needs to be reconsidered, ' he wrote in a tweet.

If you want to have your Twitter account verified, the first thing to do is to submit a request.

The company has also come under heavy fire for verifying the account of a white supremacist.

What all this information gets at is, as Twitter sees it, the point of verification: To prove that an account is authentic.

"A verified badge does not imply an endorsement by Twitter", the social media site notes.

"Go ahead, add that middle name or even a few more emojis", said Twitter, which has been attracting a great deal of criticism of late.
