EA Acquires Respawn Entertainment For (Up To) $455 Million

They then went on to create Respawn Entertainment together, and the series Titanfall: published by Electronic Arts (EA), it took numerous design choices of a modern Call of Duty game, and added some flair in the form of giant robots.

The terms of the deal will see EA pay $151 million in cash for the studio and up to $164 million in equity over the next four years.

"We started Respawn with the goal to create a studio with some of the best talent in the industry, and to be a top developer of innovative games", said Vince Zampella, CEO of Respawn Entertainment in a press release. Respawn Entertainment now have a couple projects confirmed to be in the works, with one of them being an untitled Star Wars game, again published by EA. Still, Respawn are a very talented bunch of developers, and if they can push against EA' practices as much as they can, they could come out of this okay. A cynical view of the acquisition would be that EA is a place where game studios go to die.

EA has confirmed that they have acquired Respawn Entertainment, along with their Titanfall IP.

It says a lot about where EA are at right now as a publisher and in the eyes of gamers that this news was met with alarm. With Titanfall and Star Wars, EA has been a great development partner that supports us and doesn't interfere with our process for making games or studio culture.

"We've had success as an independent company but as we look to how we want to compete in the future, and the challenges that face us in a rapidly changing landscape, now is the time for us to combine forces with a global industry leader like EA".

It's important to remember just who Respawn is: the core of their team is the original Call of Duty team - up and through Modern Warfare 2 - who followed Respawn co-founder Vince Zampella to the new studio after a bitter falling out with and subsequent lawsuit against Activision. Respawn is a bit of a titan itself in the game development arena, and here is hoping it does not fall.
