Pakistan offers India a meeting between Kulbhushan Jadhav and his wife

Finally, humanitarian senses have prevailed into the Pakistan government to allow wrongly convicted death-row prisoner Kulbhushan Jadhav to meet his wife.

The Ministry said: "The government of Pakistan has made a decision to arrange a meeting of Commander Kulbhushan Jadhav with his wife, in Pakistan, purely on humanitarian grounds".

"A Note Verbale to this effect has been sent to the Indian High Commission in Islamabad, today", he said, adding that the meeting will take place on Pakistani soil. There were speculation that the two countries discussed the issue in a recent meeting between External Affairs Minister Sushma Sawraj and the newly-appointed Pakistani High Commissioner to New Delhi Sohail Mahmood, Pakistani media said.

This comes after Pakistan had repeatedly rejected India's request for consular access to Jadhav who was sentenced to death by a Pakistani military court in April this year on charges of espionage and sabotage.

The International Court of Justice at The Hague had stayed the execution of Kulbhushan Jadhav in May till the time the hearing in the case gets over.

Jadhav, on 22 June, filed a mercy petition before Pakistan Army chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa.

In a reaction to the move, Pakistan's relations with neighbour India tensed, and India approached the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to hear the case. India has been trying to arrange a meeting of Jadhav with his family but Pakistan had not accepted visa applications so far.

Pakistan had earlier said that Jadhav purportedly "confessed" to being a spy forRAW in a video release.

Pakistan claims to own caught Jadhav from Balochistan province on three March 2016, when he reportedly entered from Islamic Republic of Iran. In September, India presented its written pleadings, also known as memorials, at the ICJ as per its directive. Over the last one year, Pakistan has denied multiple requests from the Indian government to let officials meet him.
