Why The Texas Church Shooting Suspect Was Able To Buy A Gun

A police report obtained by Houston's KPRC details Kelley's escape from the Peak Behavioral Health Services facility in New Mexico in 2012, the same year he was charged with hitting his wife and infant step-son while in the U.S. Air Force.

Police were also told that Kelley had been accused of "attempting to carry out death threats" against his "military chain of command". Ivey says he hadn't seen Devin Kelley in person for years, but that he maintained contact through Facebook. "An investigation is now underway, and the Air Force is taking it very seriously, said the source".

He was apprehended without incident at an El Paso, Texas, bus station shortly after he had run off, according to a police report filed in that city.

Kelley "suffered from mental health disorders" and had apparently been sent to the facility during his Air Force court-martial proceedings on charges of beating his wife and his stepson in 2011 and 2012, according to the police records.

An error on the part of US Air Force to enter the Texas gunman's past criminal record in a national database may have enabled him to pass background checks and buy weapons that he used to wreak havoc in the church Sutherland Springs, killing 26 people and wounding 20 others.

The sheriff's office also said deputies had been called to Kelley's residence in February 2014 for a "disturbance", but that no arrests were made.

Kelley's troubled air force background has been a focus of investigators in the tiny Texas town of Sutherland Springs since he stormed into a church there on Sunday with a semiautomatic assault rifle and opened fire on worshipers.

Kelley "was consumed by a dispute with his mother-in-law and spent time posting anti-God and pro-gun statements on Facebook in the months before the shooting", CNN reported, quoting officials, acquaintances and former classmates of the shooter. Texas's Republican Governor Greg Abbott told CBS News there was evidence that Kelley had mental health problems and had been denied a state gun permit.
