The San Diego-based carrier Theodore Roosevelt is joining two other flattops for a major exercise in the western Pacific that begins Saturday.

The units that have been assigned the strike force will conduct coordinated operations in worldwide waters to demonstrate the United States Navy's unique potential to operate multiple carrier strike groups as a coordinated strike force effort, according to the official website of the Commander, U.S. 7 Fleet. The aerial formation consists of aircraft from the carrier strike groups as well as Air Force aircraft.

Three U.S. military aircraft carriers are heading to the same part of the world at the same time, to take part in a rare military exercise not seen in a decade.

Units assigned to the strike force will conduct coordinated operations in global waters in order to demonstrate the U.S. Navy's unique capability to operate multiple carrier strike groups as a coordinated strike force effort.

Three U.S. aircraft carrier strike groups now converged near South Korea will kick off a rare four-day exercise in the Western Pacific on Saturday as U.S. President Donald Trump tours Asia.

On his Asia tour, Trump has been shoring up the US' alliance with key American allies in the region such as South Korea and Japan as they jointly ramp up efforts against North Korea to scale down its nuclear and missile programmes.

According to Swift, the operation will act as a reminder to North Korea that the U.S.is strongly committed "to the security and stability of the region". Speaking in Tokyo on Monday, Trump renewed his warning that the "era of strategic patience" with North Korea was over.

Such large-scale drills serve as a potent reminder of the USA ability to rapidly mobilize military force, a capability the Trump administration has been keen to emphasize as Pyongyang races ahead with tests to build a nuclear-tipped missile capable of striking the United States.

The statement did not rule out North Korea, who previously threatened to fire ballistic missiles off Guam, an American island in the Western Pacific, which hosts strategic US military bases.

The CIA has said North Korea could be only months away from developing the ability to hit the United States with nuclear weapons, a scenario Trump has vowed to prevent.

On Wednesday, North Korea accused Seoul of "blindly" siding with the United States, which it said was planning a nuclear war on the peninsula. This is a very different administration than the US has had in the past.
