Packers Cut TE Martellus Bennett

On Wednesday, the Packers cut Bennett, a former Texas A&M star, with a failure to disclose a medical condition designation. Bennett replaced Jared Cook and was thought to become a major part of Green Bay's offense as another dependable target for Rodgers in the passing game.

The Packers are expected to use fellow tight ends Lance Kendricks and Richard Rodgers while Bennett remains sidelined after the two saw their workload increase in Monday's game.

The Packers signed Bennett to a three-year, $21 million contract as a free agent in March. Bennett had base salaries of $900,000 this season, $3.6 million (plus a $2 million roster bonus) in 2018 and $5.65 million in 2019.

Last month, Bennett, 30, wrote an Instagram story explaining he was leaning toward retiring after this season.

"I know he was in here [Tuesday]", McCarthy said prior to Wednesday's practice. He has just 24 receptions for 233 yards and zero touchdowns this season.

Had Bennett chose to retire after the season - as he said he might in a seemingly out-of-nowhere social media post during the bye week - the club likely would have gone after the $4.2 million unamortized portion of the $6.3 million guaranteed signing bonus Bennett received. His 33.3 yards per game is the lowest total of his career since 2011 when he found himself behind Jason Witten on the tight end depth chart with the Dallas Cowboys.

The injury would have kept him out of Sunday's game at Chicago, which is where Bennett calls home after spending the 2013 through 2015 seasons with the Bears. He is the brother of the Seahawks' Michael Bennett, who has sat during the anthem. That day, Bennett left the locker room telling reporters he wouldn't be talking with them because there was "nothing to talk about".

"The other guys have proven they can do it as well", tight ends coach Brian Angelichio said last week when asked about not having Bennett.
