Danica Roem Has Become The First Openly Transgender Person Elected To Office

She also talked about her transition and said: "I started transitioning while working at the newspaper in 2012, began hormone replacement therapy December 3, 2013, changed my name, gender and byline in 2015 and no one cared".

Roem, who couldn't immediately be reached for an interview Tuesday night, openly discussed her gender identity during her campaign, but it was far from her focus.

In the race for Virginia's 13th District, Roem, who was the Virginia House of Delegates candidate, defeated Republican incumbent Bob Marshall. She also argued that Marshall had spent too much of his energy during his term tackling social issues.

"HRC was proud to mobilize voters to support Danica Roem's trailblazing candidacy, and we look forward to working with her to help continue moving equality forward in Virginia", the Human Rights Campaign president Chad Griffin noted in a statement after Roem's win. In that time, Marshall wrote an anti-gay marriage amendment and sponsored Virginia's transgender bathroom bill (which infamously banned students from using the bathroom that corresponded to their gender identity and required administrators to out trans kids to their parents), as well as a ban on gay people serving in the National Guard-just lots and lots of terrible stuff.

He once described himself as Virginia's "chief homophobe," according to the Washington Post.

On the campaign trail, Marshall and other Republicans repeatedly misidentified Roem's gender. She says she was very specific about the issues her campaign was built on, and it resonated- in part, because of her background.

Roem is a former reporter who sings in a metal band in her spare time. "It was great. I could just keep doing my job".

The race was one of the year's most high profile and drew national and global attention and big money to the northern Virginian district.

Roem wasn't the only transgender candidate elected Tuesday.

She added that there were many stories that were run about her being a transgender rather than her qualifications for office.

"We made history tonight", the 33 year-old from Northern Virginia, proudly declared at newly-elected Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam's election night party.

Marshall also thanked his supporters in a statement on Facebook after conceding his defeat.
