After years of court trials, Apple has finally claimed victory over Samsung in the Slide-to-Unlock patent battle for a total of $119.6 million.
The jury found all accused Samsung devices in infringement of Apple's '647 data detectors patent and partial infringement on the '721 patent for "slide-to-unlock" functionality.
One of Apple's patent disputes with Samsung has finally come to a close, with the US Supreme Court turning down Samsung's appeal in the United States dollars 120 million slide-to-unlock patent infringement case.
The case centered around Apple's familiar slide-to-unlock patent as well as autocorrect and quick links, which turn information such as phone numbers into links.
We've asked Samsung for its response to the Supreme Court decision.
But here's the amusing part: all the original phones involved in the battle have already been phased out of protection.
A three-judge panel of the Federal Circuit, a Washington-based court that specializes in patent matters, had originally overturned the verdict, but it was reinstated in an October 2016 ruling by a full slate of 11 judges on that court. This latest ruling is just one of the many cases that Apple and Samsung are fighting out. However, with the Supreme Court too, ruling against Samsung, the Korean smartphones giant has literally run out of options.
The company had noted that one of Apple's patents at issue in the case had been invalidated by courts "and yet today's decision allows Apple to unjustly profit from this patent, stunts innovation and places competition in the courtroom rather than the marketplace".
Of course Apple court case over Samsung it is not over yet. Although Apple is now reducing its reliance on Samsung components for its iPhones.
In April this year, Huawei had defeated Samsung in a patent battle in Chian where the Galaxy 8 maker was ordered to pay 80 million Yuan (USD 12 million) to Huawei for infringing its cellular smartphone technologies.
