  • Facebook might soon let you send money using red envelope feature

Transfer sums are limited to £2,500 at a time and there's a rolling 30-day limit of £10,000 in place.

A Facebook spokesperson didn't share details with Recode but also didn't deny the existence of the mobile payment test, which was first discovered on November 3 by The Next Web's Matt Navarra.

Facebook will take the hit of a small fee issued by the card companies for each transaction processed but believes this to be a price worth paying in order to improve the utility of their service.

Before this change was introduced you could only send £250 ($328) at a time to friends in the same country as you, but Facebook hopes that people can eventually use the feature to pay businesses too. It will be free to send and receive money over Messenger, with payments taking one to three business days to clear, depending on the bank (s) involved. There are an endless number of situations you might find yourself in, where you need to quickly send money to a friend, or maybe even receive money from said friend.

"It's those everyday moments we're trying to make a little easier - we've seen that in the USA most people use payments in Messenger to send less than 50 dollars at a time".

The social networking giant this week launched peer-to-peer payments on the Messenger app in the United Kingdom - a full two years after the feature was available in the United States. The top reasons for sending money include celebrations, social events and festive occasions.

Facebook Messenger P-to-P payments also have a long way to go in the us before they are successful. "Finally, Messenger payments are offered as a regulated payment service, meaning they're directly subject to consumer protection requirements". And indeed doesn't directly handle the cash itself.

Is Facebook Messenger payments secure?

That said, most of these issues can be overcome by Facebook's sheer scale. Also, a pin can be enabled to allow money to be sent.
