That blunt assessment from the Pentagon is in response to a letter from two Democratic congressmen asking about casualty assessments in a conflict with North Korea.

North Korea has condemned President Donald Trump's harsh rhetoric against their leader Kim Jong-un during a joint press conference with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzō Abe on Sunday.

The Post reported that a statement from 16 lawmakers - all but one of them Democrats - obtained along with the Pentagon letter said the "assessment underscores what we've known all along: There are no good military options for North Korea". Trump ramped up his tough rhetoric against North Korea when he arrived in Japan yesterday, saying the United States and its allies are prepared to defend freedom and "no dictator" should underestimate U.S. resolve.

Protestors were seen marching near the U.S. Embassy where chants of "No Trump" were heard loud and clear, with more protests planned during Trump's stay in South Korea.

"We are working to counter the unsafe aggressions of the regime in North Korea", Trump said, according to Express.

North Korea's recent actions, including several missiles that overflew Japan and Pyongyang's sixth and largest nuclear test, have raised the stakes in the most critical global challenge of Trump's presidency.

South Korea imposed unilateral sanctions on 18 North Koreans on Monday, barring any financial transactions between those sanctioned and any South Koreans, as part of worldwide efforts to dry up Pyongyang's illegal cash flows.

Addressing the US military personnel stationed at the Japanese air base, Trump warned "no one, no dictator, no regime. should underestimate American resolve".

Both Trump and South Korea's liberal President Moon Jae-in agree that it's time to ramp up sanctions and pressure on North Korea, which has ignored global condemnation as it moves forward with its nuclear and missile tests. North Korea "will be a big topic" for Japan, South Korea and China, Trump said about the three countries that he will visit first during his Asian tour.

They said South Korea's promises that it will not deploy additional parts of the THAAD system, will not join the U.S.

"Any operation to pursue North Korean nuclear weapons would likely be spearheaded by U.S. Special Operations troops", it added.

The claim was made in September by a retired Air Force general who said the figure was estimated based on a conventional war scenario and did not include potential use of nuclear weapons. "Now is the time not for dialogue but for applying a maximum level of pressure on North Korea".

North Korea has said in public statements that it wants an official end to the Korean War.
