Koenigsegg Agera RS Is Now The World's Fastest Car

  • Koenigsegg Agera RS

Over two directions in an 11-mile stretch of Highway 160 between Las Vegas and Pahrump in Nevada, helpfully closed by the local authorities.

Last month, Bugatti set an acceleration and deceleration record, taking the Chiron hypercar from a dead stop to 248.5 miles per hour (400 km/h) then back to a stop again in a mind-bending 42. Towards the end of the second run, the Agera RS even surpasses 450 km/h - close to the speed of a small aircraft.

Bugatti's previous record of 41.96sec is 5.52sec slower than Koenigsegg's, although Bugatti has yet to do a full top-speed run in the Chiron. Previously, it was reported that the Koenigsegg Agera RS blocked record Bugatti Chiron for acceleration up to 400 km/h and further stop.

The video above shows that the Agera RS reaches 272mph (437.7kmh) on the first run and an impressive 284.3mph (457kmh) during the second. Since the vehicle, a 1,360-hp (1,014-kW) model was due to be delivered to a customer in the United States, it was decided that Nevada would form the ideal backdrop to the car's blistering performance.

The Venom never officially held the record because it only did a single run in one direction.

Koenigsegg told Jalopnik the run was done on Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires, the same tires delivered to customers, and that Michelin reps were on-hand to make sure everything went ok. It recently announced that the successor to the Venom GT, the 1600-bhp Venom F5, could break the 300-mph limit.

Koenigsegg's record is particularly impressive because it was completed not only in a production auto, but down a section of public highway using "standard" tyres.
