  • FSU suspends all fraternities, sororities in wake of student's death

Following the recent death of a fraternity pledge, Florida State University has banned all fraternities and sororities.

Andrew Coffey, a 20-year-old civil engineering student and Pi Kappa Phi fraternity pledge, was found unresponsive Friday, the morning after a chapter party, and pronounced dead at the scene, USA Today reports. "Like most universities, we worry about alcohol and drug abuse and other risky behaviors, and we are doing all we can to educate our students", Thrasher said in a statement.

It's unclear how long the suspensions will last, and Thrasher has also banned the use of alcohol during organized school events.

"I want to send a serious message, I really do", Thrasher said, according to the Tallahassee Democrat.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the student's family and friends", Pi Kappa Phi CEO Mark E. Timmes said in a statement obtained by ABC News.

TPD spokesman David Northway said Friday evening that several people were being questioned in connection with the death but no one has been arrested.

The university has more than 700 organizations outside the campus' Greek life. "Unfortunately we've got to take steps with our students, to make sure this never happens again".

The fraternity has been suspended by its national organization pending the conclusion of the investigation.

Florida State is at least the third university this year to suspend Greek Life, behind Pennsylvania State and Louisiana State.

Students in those chapters will be allowed to remain as residents in their fraternity or sorority house and will have meal service. "They will have to participate in the solution".
