Israel Threatens Intervention After Nusra Bomb Kills Nine in Syrian Druze Village

  • Israeli Hit by Syrian Gunfire; IDF Prepares to Enter Bloody Civil War

The statement was an unusually explicit Israeli pledge to intervene in the war in Syria, where Israeli officials are voicing deeper alarm at the role of Iran and its Lebanese ally Hezbollah, which are fighting alongside the Syrian government.

Violence by Islamist rebels against Syria's Druze minority has been controversial within Israel, which has its own Druze minority, and this appears to have convinced Israel to change its position, at least in this one village's case.

The attack hit the village of Hader, populated by members of the Druze majority, which lies near the disengagement line that divides the Syrian-controlled part of the Golan from that occupied by Israel.

"In the aftermath of the terrorist attack, terrorist groups carried out a heavy attack on Hader, and army units and the Popular Defence units [pro-government militias] clashed with the attackers", Sans said.

The Nusra Front a year ago changed its name to the Fateh al-Sham Front and stated it had cut ties with al-Qaeda, though most analysts believe the two organizations are still linked.

The SOHR said government troops and allied fighters were among the casualties of Friday's clashes.

In a departure from Israel's policy of minimal intervention in Syria's civil war, the Israeli army said it would help defend a Druze village in Syria where Sunni militants killed nine people.

The PA ministry's statement reflects the opinion of the Syrian government, which accuses Israel of supporting terrorist groups in Syria.

In a statement, the Israeli military IDF said it "is prepared and ready to assist the residents of the village and prevent damage to or the capture of the village Hader out of commitment to the Druze population".

The statement came after hundreds of Druze residents of Israel gathered at the border in support of their relatives on the Syrian side, according to Israel's Channel 2 News.

There are approximately 140,000 Druze in Israel, including 20,000 in the Golan Heights.

Speaking from London, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said "we safeguard our borders".

The Israeli army then released a photograph of leader of the Northern Command Yoel Strick with a number of Druze leaders, including Druze spiritual leader in Israel Sheikh Mowafaq Tarif.

The Wall Street Journal said in the same month that Israel had been providing Takfiri terrorists in Syria's Golan Heights with a steady flow of funds and medical supplies.
