Page said it was the only time he met Sessions. News that he had mentioned the visit to Attorney General Jeff Sessions drew headlines, as it complicated Sessions' claims that he did not know about the Trump campaign's Russian Federation contacts.

"Sen. Franken, I'm not aware of any of those activities".

Mueller's investigators on Monday arrested Paul Manafort, Trump's former campaign manager, and former business associate Richard Gates, on a 12-count indictment charging them with conspiracy and money laundering. "He said Sessions did not react or comment one way or the other", Conaway said in an interview.

Franken asked: "If there is any evidence that anyone affiliated with the Trump campaign communicated with the Russian government in the course of this campaign, what will you do?" "Is that what you're saying?"

"Ultimately, whether or not he committed perjury, will be again, I believe, Bob Mueller's call", Franken said.

In a letter to Sessions on Thursday, Sen. "I am deeply troubled that this newest revelation strongly suggests that the Senate-and the American public-cannot trust your word".

Senator Lindsey Graham, a Republican member of the Judiciary Committee, said it makes sense to ask Sessions to clarify the chain of events and how he reconciles it with his testimony before the committee. "The attorney general immediately dismissed it and moved on".

An adviser to Donald Trump's presidential campaign has admitted meeting with Russian government officials in 2016, according to a report in the New York Times which cited his testimony before a congressional committee.

Sessions replied, "I have not seen anything that would indicate collusion with Russians to impact the campaign". Understandably, it was as irrelevant then as it is now.

A source familiar with Sessions' comments to Congress told ABC News the attorney general "has been entirely truthful and consistent on this matter".

Franken added, "This is another example in an alarming pattern in which you, the nation's top law enforcement officer, apparently failed to tell the truth, under oath, about the Trump team's contacts with agents of Russia-a hostile foreign power that interfered in the 2016 election".

At his Senate confirmation hearing in January, Sessions denied any contacts with Russian officials during the presidential campaign. And whether it becomes a problem for him or not may just depend on President Trump and also on Congress. Democrats in the Senate are demanding that Sessions come back and explain this discrepancy - how he could have been in the room for a meeting where someone said this thing and then said he knew nothing about Russian connections during the campaign. "As far as Sessions seemed to be concerned, when he shut down this idea of Papadopoulos engaging with Russian Federation, that was the end of it and he moved the meeting along to other issues".
