Australian senate president confirms dual citizenship, will resign

03 November, 2017, 00:31 | Author: Priscilla Morrison
  • Senate President Stephen Parry is the eighth politician to reveal he is a dual citizen

Meanwhile, Nationals members are pushing for NSW senator John "Wacka" Williams to take the Senate president's role if Senator Parry leaves parliament.

The resignation of the MP has added to the political turmoil following a high court ruling last week which found five MPs were ineligible because they were dual citizens.

For the past few months while the citizenship fiasco has unfolded, Parry has sat silent, choosing to keep doubts over his own status to himself, despite knowing his father was British-born.

Senator Parry thanked his colleagues for their support and confidence.

Parry was born in the Apple Isle, but his father came to Australia from the United Kingdom at the age of 10.

Because my departure is rapid and an unexpected event, I will not have the usual opportunity to address you in the Senate one last time.

The Prime Minister delayed a trip to Israel to sort out the mess left by the High Court's decision to disqualify Nationals leaders Barnaby Joyce and Fiona Nash.

"With a heavy heart I inform you that I have received advice from the British Home Office that I am a British citizen by virtue of my father's birthplace", Mr Parry said.

Mr Parry is likely to be replaced by the next candidate on the Liberal party's list at the last election.

"(An audit is) one of these things that sounds great, but writing to every country on the planet and asking 'is there some way I'm a citizen of your country through some form of linear descent?' is a bit silly", he said.

Parry says the court's decision made it clear he will have to resign if his dual nationality is confirmed.

Parry's late disclosure also embarrassed his parliamentary colleague and the government leader in the Senate, Attorney-General George Brandis, who, just a day before the outgoing Senate President sought clarification on his citizenship status, told the media "I have no reason whatever to believe that there is any other Coalition member who is in the same position".
