Tourists to be banned from climbing Australia's most famous attraction

"It is an extremely important place, not a playground or theme park like Disneyland", Board Chairman and Anangu man Sammy Wilson said.

It's within Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park, which also includes the 36 red-rock domes of the Kata Tjuta formation.

Around 300,000 people visit each year, with Australians and then Japanese most likely to climb.

Figures show only 16 per cent of visitors made the climb during its open times between 2011 and 2015.

Uluru now has around 300,000 visitors each year.

Uluru's land title was handed back to its traditional owners in 1985, but was immediately leased to the Australian federal government to be jointly managed as a national park for 99 years.

'The traditional owners of the rock have had concerns over the years, ' he said.

Mr Ross said the board agreed to delay the date of the climb's actual closure for another two years.

"Closing the climb is not something to feel upset about but a cause for celebration. Let's come together; let's close it together". "We are not stopping tourists, just this activity".

The board had announced in 2010 that it would close the climb once the number of visitors to Uluru who had defied the wishes of the traditional owners fell below 20%.

"Instead of tourists feeling disappointed in what they can do here, they can experience the homelands with Anangu and really enjoy the fact that they learned so much more about culture". The walking tracks on the rock could be removed, and steep fines levied for people who step on Uluru.
