From 1997 to 2017, the traditionally-themed "red cups" have evolved from a red cup featuring holiday designs like ornaments and snowmen, to solid red cups, and then to last year's red cups with submitted designs from Starbucks fanatics.

In a press release, Starbucks creative director Leanne Fremar said, "This year's cup is intentionally created to encourage our customers to add their own color and illustrations".

The beloved red Starbucks Christmas cup is getting a holiday makeover. "We love the idea of everyone making this year's cup their own", said Starbucks's executive creative director Leanne Fremar.

Is it that time of year already?

While the cups are noticeably less red this year, the design has plenty of Christmas-y visuals to appease the critics - including a Christmas tree, doves, a stack of presents, snowflakes (for the snowflakes!), and two hands holding a red ribbon. Groups like Stand.earth, through its Better Cup campaign, have likewise advocated for better practices, with the fact that more than 8,000 Starbucks cups end up in landfills every minute being a prime point in their platforms.

However, this is the first year in recent memory that the cups aren't red.

In a sure sign that the holiday season is upon us, Starbucks Corp.'s seasonal cups have arrived in stores.

In 2017, for the first time in memory, the cups aren't red.

Cup sleeves for hot beverages are designed with the words "Give Good", this year's holiday theme.

"Giving good can be as small as someone opening the door for you, or recognizing the people that enrich your life - your child's teacher, a caregiver, a family friend", Fremar said.
